Club History - Keith Sichler
Keith dug up a Bulletin from Meeting 2535 on 9th February 2005. President was Paul Mazourek and Chairman for the meeting was Brian Moodie. The Club Goals were to celebrate our 50th Anniversary and Rotary's 100th Birthdays. Rob Walton was given that task. History records that both events were very successful with a 'Jazz Under The Stars' evening at the Maritime Musem Gardens celebrating Rotary's 100th and a Gala Dinner at the Westland Hotel to celebrate our 50th. GUEST SPEAKER
Kerrie Willsher - My Trip to Cambodia
Early in December of 2024, Kerre embarked on a trip to visit the ancient city of Angkor Watt in Cambodia. She signed up for a guided tour with 11 others. The tour landed in the beautiful Han long Bay in Vietnam and stayed on a paddle boat.
The tour proceeded from there to Cambodia. Part of the trip involved a visit to the Killing Fields of Pol Pot, which Kerre noted is harrowing and emotional and not for the faint-hearted.
After that it was on to Angkor Watt, a temple which was built in the early 12th century. It is a magnificent example of Khmer architecture of immense size (160 ha) and is surrounded by a moat, 5 km in length. It was built as a Hindu temple but was generally abandoned sometime later and was cared for by Buddhist monks. The temple complex fell into disuse before being restored in the 20th century with various international agencies involved in the project. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kerre has had this on her 'Bucket list' for some time and now we know why.
