Growing Local Communities

Nearly 800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day. Rotary members are passionate about providing sustainable solutions to poverty.

Our members and our foundation work to strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.
We provide training and access to well-paying jobs and financial management institutions.

Speaker
Trey Oldham

Trey works in the aerospace engineering department in Illinois. He has a Ph.D. from St Louis Missouri, Washington University.
He is currently working on Plasma processing of materials, working with very high temperatures. Plasma is a state of matter e.g. cold is ice, heat becomes gas, and extreme heat 3000c becomes plasma.
The most common plasmas are stars and lightning.  One application of plasma is Neon signs.
Use plasma to make semi-conductive materials for phones, computers, and more recently medicine, a patient not responding to antibiotics can now be treated via plasma which can by-pass the immune system.
Plasma for aerospace applications is used for atmospheric re-entry on Space shuttles etc.
Trey is testing materials with ultra-high temperatures for space shuttles. To see which material can withstand this heat
For example, 1500c can melt steel but 3000c is needed for plasma.

A little bit of Rotary Humour

from the Rotary Club of Eltham
(an oldie but a goodie)

A doctor, a lawyer, and a Rotarian in charge of fundraising all die and arrive at the Pearly Gates about the same time. St. Peter tells them they may each have one thing to take with them to Heaven.

The doctor is first and asks for $1 million. This is given and proceeds to enter Heaven. The lawyer, not to be outdone, asks for $2 million. "Very well," says St. Peter and opens the gate to Heaven for the lawyer.

Finally, it is time for the Rotarian, who had just finished a fundraising project for The Rotary Foundation. St. Peter asks him what he would like to take to Heaven. The fundraiser moves up very close to St. Peter, and in a soft voice asks, "If it's not too much trouble, could I just have the names of those two people who were ahead of me in line?"
