Leanne spent some time just chillin' on the back patio with a glass of wine and some chocolate; Brian (B2) had to say NO when asked to drive the bus; Shelley and Jane had a good time in the MCU on Saturday at the WFL Grand Final and also helprd put together 22 Packages of Hope for the Whyalla Mental Health Unit; Larisa obtained her Advanced Certificate in Refractory Engineering; Brian (B1) had a CT Scan and they found nothing to worry about; Kerre has sent off all of the blankets people have knitted squares for, to Ethiopia. Kerre also commiserated over the AFL Port v Hawthorn match whilst Greg rejoiced.
President's Remarks - Jane Owens
Unfortunately, our former venue has closed, and tonight is therefore a trial to see if meeting here suits. We still need to recover our paraphernalia from Breeze Bistro and that will happen as soon as it can be arranged.
Shelley and I assembled 22 Packages of Hope for The Whyalla Hospital. These will be delivered during the week.
Reports
Brian Herd. Please check out the 'Events Document' in the Documents section of our webpage in the Members Area. This is a step-by-step summary of what is required to undertake any of the projects.
and events we undertake. Brian is seeking feedback.
WFL Grand Final. Keith reported that the MCU had gross takings of $1,276 which was not too bad considering we were not able to provide Donuts due to supply chain issues!
Guest Speakers
Homelessness and Domestic Violence in Whyalla
Abbey & Cindy from Centacare
Homelessness
Abbey explained that homelessness is often hidden as many people 'couch surf' and move from place to place. However, for families, it is much more obvious and greater support is required. The Whyalla Homelessness Service provides crisis, supportive and transitional accommodation with individualised in-Centre and outreach case management for those at risk of or experiencing homelessness. There are 28 properties in Whyalla which Centacare have for transitional accommodation. Early intervention tenancy support is also provided to persons with at risk tenancies.
Domestic Violence.
The Whyalla Regional Domestic Violence Service supports victim-survivors of current or recent domestic and/or Aboriginal family violence who are at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness. We offer support regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, cultural background, religious beliefs, physical or mental health conditions, or other diverse identities. Some are referred by SAPOL, others simply present themselves to the Centre in Colebrook Street. DV is often fueled by a combination of alcohol and drug abuse, mental health issues and behavioral issues, or a combination of any or all. There are 3 emergency shelters available in Whyalla.
Services are guided by the risk, safety, and identified needs of the victim-survivor, along with the availability of and access to specialist support for their unique circumstances. If necessary, we may refer individuals to other services better suited to meet their needs and ensure that all services, including accommodation, remain safe and accessible for all victim-survivors.
This is one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus. We all know how critical reading and writing are for success in life – for gaining information, communicating, making agreements, and so forth.
Enhancing Basic Education skills and Literacy are essential in reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace. Improvements can reduce maternal death, improve childhood survivability, and reduce poverty. They can also enable success in business or a profession.
Projects undertaken by a Rotary Club can address low adult literacy, returning youth to school, enhancing student performance, or supplementing limited school resources.
