April 2024 is
Environmental Month

As People of Action, Rotarians have been shaping
the conversation on the environment for years

Fifty years ago, the first Earth Day was held on 22 April 1970, launching a wave of action to protect our environment, including the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States. Other countries soon followed suit. Every year since, the day has been set aside to focus on mobilizing for action to protect our planet.

As people of action, Rotarians have been shaping the conversation on the environment for years, from addressing climate change that threatens entire food systems to fighting pollution that clogs our air and water. Rotarians are well-suited for the challenge. They use their connections to find creative solutions and take action to safeguard our vital resources.

The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) assists Rotary clubs, districts, and           multi-districts in building awareness, inspiring action, and planning service projects that focus on environmental sustainability, awareness of climate change, and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

his week,
Dan Butler is the Manager, of Engagement and Social Licence, with the Office of Hydrogen Power SA. (OHPSA). He lives in Adelaide with his partner and their four children.  At present, he spends more time in Whyalla than at home.  An interesting note he shared with us was that, he has had to change his address at the Gym he goes to because he attends the one here more often.

Dan’s Job is to be here in Whyalla and have conversations with the leaders and the people of Whyalla on what SA’s Hydrogen Jobs Plan means for our community.  They have an office at 73 Westland Shopping Centre and the scale model can be seen there (Dan and Aiden brought it along tonight).  The office is open Tuesday to Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm or via appointment.

The PowerPoint presentation Dan brought along and talked to included
  • How far it stretches across the region, from Olympic Dam down to Port Lincoln and across to Ceduna.  It encompasses, Solar and Wind; Copper; Magnetite Iron Ore; Port Facilities and Smelters and Steelworks
  • SA’s Hydrogen Journey from 2017 through to 2026
  • Renewable Hydrogen Electrolysis
  • The Hydrogen Jobs Plan
  • Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) Preferred delivery partners.  BOC and epic energy
  • Power generation GE Verona is the preferred turbine supplier
  • Transmission Connector ElectaNet
  • Hydrogen Supply, early agreement signed with GFG Alliance
  • Worker Accommodation
  • Hydrogen Information Hub and the Port Bonython Hydrogen Hub
  • Northern Water

This evening was well attended and many questions were asked. There was plenty of Interest in the model Dan had brought along.
Immediate Past President Brian Herd gave the vote of thanks.  We look forward to hearing from Dan again with further progress of the OPHSA
