Speaker Past Rotary Club of Whyalla member Peter Reid
Chair Keith gave Peter a wonderful introduction commenting on his past history with our Club.
Peter gave the meeting a bit of an insight into his work with Rotary when he was a member of the Club through Youth Exchange. “Being in Rotary was a really good experience for me I got a lot from it. We still have contact with the students” He progressed to group study exchange, where you see jobs being done in another country. We took an exchange group off to Mexico. The first night when we arrived, we were taken to a big Hotel. There was a big table with lots of food, then we went home and met with the families. Breakfast was at 10 am for two hours. It was really good to meet a lot of people, the clubs in Mexico are very different to here, they do a lot more entertaining. They visited twenty-four Rotary Clubs, there were four exchange students plus me.
The population of Mexico City is 9 million the most densely populated city in the Americas. A long way above sea level,
In Mexico Rotary paid to build and operate Hospitals - the names over there are very long we met Dr Hector Ernesto Montalvo Lopez We went to lots of places where the Indians were making and manufacturing Furniture. The Church there, the Rotary Club has just fixed the roof.
DG Elect Carlos Alevado Cadena had been talking with John Rowe in Port Pirie. We found we were working three shifts doing lots of talks all in Mexico in general. We went to a facility where all the kids who cross the border illegally, are collected and brought back. Rotary along with UNICEF and the government provided a building for them. The parents go and leave the kids, Rotary looks after them for a while.
Peter is now living in Mexico. In the city where he lives, there are 1 and half million people and it is ten minutes away from the American border. Where he lives, people come from other countries to work in the factories, the factories often run English Classes Being just ten minutes away from the US border, Peter and his wife Martha spend a lot of time in the US shopping. It is a lot cheaper and better quality. They have special passes ‘a trusted traveller pass’. Most of the Border Patrol are connected to the American side, they ask Martha lots of questions but when Peter drives he is welcomed with open arms because he is Australian.
A lot of the stories we hear about Mexico are true but there is a lot of money in the city. There are very rich people there. Martha is a photographer and she would take photos of weddings and the price is never a problem. Peter and Martha have a good life.
The reason Peter is back in Whyalla is to clean up his house ready to sell. When he was cleaning up he came across a gift he was given when he attended the Rotary International Conference in Mexico.
Each District was given one. It is quite a famous building in San Louise it is an old building. He is not sure why they got it. The carvings on the side are all to do with the indigenous people. It is part of our Club’s History and Peter would like us to have it.
Closing remarks
President Mic - The Christmas show let's hear from Jane and Leanne. Next week is Club assembly. Leanne is looking into getting the Ute for the Pageant.
A little bit of Rotary Fun Facts
Honorary Membership
"Honorary" is one of the two types of membership a person may have in a Rotary club. This type of membership is the highest distinction a Rotary club can confer and is exercised only in exceptional cases to recognize an individual for unusual service and contributions to Rotary and society. Honorary members cannot propose new members to the club, do not hold office and are exempt from attendance requirements and club dues.
Many distinguished heads of state, explorers, authors, musicians, astronauts and other public personalities have been honorary members of Rotary clubs, including King Gustaf of Sweden, King George VI of England, King Badouin of Belgium, King Hassan III of Morocco, Sir Winston Churchill, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, Charles Lindbergh, composer Jean Sibelius, explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, Thor Heyerdahl, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Dr. Albert Sabin, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and many of the presidents of the United States. Truly, those selected for honorary membership are those who have done much to further the ideals of Rotary.
