On last Tuesday night we were given a meal and a guided tour of the Bedford Day Options Centre. The Centre is managed by Shelley Jonker who treated us to a 3-course meal prepared by the clients. It was also an opportunity to present them with a brand new Cricut machine which was purchased with funds raised by Rotary at the Whyalla Show. A Cricut is a digital die-cutting machine that can cut many different materials for use in a plethora of craft projects. You can cut materials such as paper, viny into complicated shapes and letters.
The Day Options Centre was added to Bedfords existing site in April this year and is a huge expansion of facilities. It Comprises an extremely large workshop where many projects such as commercial embroidering as well as packaging and assembling products for Bunnings occurs, The centre also comprises an art studio, and a ‘Craft, Sewing and Chillin’ room.
The Centre seems a very positive space and encourages clients to become productive members of the community. Shelley has a staff of six who supervise and assist the clients of which there are 24. Shelley explained that the Centre aims to ‘’Do with, not for” the clients.
