The Rotary Club of Whyalla Hosts Inaugural Fellowship Sunday:
Celebrating Community and Excellence
An afternoon of connection, inspiration, and community spirit
This afternoon marked a vibrant new chapter for the Rotary Club of Whyalla as it hosted its first regular Fellowship Sunday, an initiative spearheaded by President Leanne Herd. Demonstrating both vision and innovation, President Herd is introducing a fresh approach to club meetings, aiming to deepen bonds among members and reinvigorate the Club’s longstanding tradition of service. The event was not only a resounding success but also a beautiful testament to the enduring values of fellowship, community, and excellence that define Rotary.
Honoring Excellence: Introducing Ms. Rachel Fitzgerald
A highlight of the afternoon was the introduction of Ms. Rachel Fitzgerald, the 2025 Glen Eden Prize of Excellence in Mental Health Studies recipient. This prestigious prize is given to individuals who have shown exceptional promise and commitment in the field of mental health, and Rachel’s achievements are a shining example of what this prize represents.
Rachel, who graduated earlier this year, is a Social Worker with Centacare. Although currently on maternity leave following the birth of her son earlier this year, her dedication to her profession and her community remains unwavering. Rachel’s presence at the event was not only a celebration of her accomplishments but also an opportunity for Club members to learn more about her journey and the passion that drives her work.
Born and raised in Whyalla, Rachel Fitzgerald embodies the spirit of the community that shaped her. Her roots run deep within the city, and as she addressed the Rotary members, it quickly became clear just how many connections she shared with those present. Whether through family, education, or mutual acquaintances, her story resonated with many in the room, sparking moments of recognition and shared experience.
Rachel spoke candidly about her path to social work, her commitment to mental health advocacy, and the personal experiences that ignited her passion for helping others. She emphasized the importance of compassion, understanding, and resilience—qualities she believes are essential not only for social workers, but for all members of a healthy community.
