February is Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention MonthToday, over 70 million people are displaced as a result of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children. We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts. Rotary creates environments of peaceAs a humanitarian organization, peace is a cornerstone of our mission. We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect. By carrying out service projects and supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, our members take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. Our commitment to peacebuilding today answers new challenges: how we can make the greatest possible impact and how we can achieve our vision of lasting change. We are approaching the concept of peace with greater cohesion and inclusivity, broadening the scope of what we mean by peacebuilding, and finding more ways for people to get involved. Rotary creates environments where peace can happen. https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/promoting-peace

March is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Month Clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education are basic necessities for a healthy environment and a productive life. When people have access to clean water and sanitation, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families. How Rotary makes help happenThrough water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs, Rotary’s people of action mobilize resources, form partnerships, and invest in infrastructure and training that yield long-term change. |

Industrial Photographer

The information below is taken from Viktor's web page. Viktor Mácha (1984) comes from Prague where he attended Theology and Religious Studies at Charles University. Since 2006 he has been traveling around the world at his own expense, documenting the heavy industrial sites such as iron works, steel works, rolling mills, forges, foundries, and coke plants. Currently, his archive comprises of several hundred mills stretching from the American Midwest to the Asian part of the Russian Urals. The only aim of these photographs is to objectively document the technological processes connected with steel making and shaping. It is possible that our generation will be one of the last to experience the fascinating world of dark, rumbling factories. The link below will let you see some of his work |

Paying it Forward Program
Apr 11, 2023
This evening Kellie will talk to our club about the Paying it Forward Program. This is a program that our own Cassandra Herd has applied to do and has been accepted. by both the program and the Club. Taken from Wild Lime marketing web page Marketing is an ongoing journey and Event Management is a destination - I love the directions I have taken, working in fields that are challenging, ever-changing, and engaging. Marketing has allowed me to use my expertise to develop a variety of campaigns. Creating a message that positions a client and makes them heard + then rolling this out across all platforms - bliss! My event experience has seen me manage large-scale events from concerts (Powderfinger/Silverchair Great Divide tour) large corporate incentives (WINTV), community engagement (Carnival Wodonga), and international events (America's Cup VIP tour) Quite simply I love what I do! |

Garimperinoros Project
May 02, 2023
Hugh Brown is an Australian documentary photographer focused primarily on mining. He has been involved with the mining industry, both large-scale and small-scale, for most of his working life. He has worked across and witnessed first-hand almost every aspect of the mining value chain giving him a unique capacity to compare and contrast some of the most topical issues across both sectors. Hugh has worked in over 30 countries and prior to becoming a photographer worked as a management consultant specialising in corporate strategy, again mostly with large-scale mining companies. In November 2022 Hugh released his eighth large-format coffee table book. Another such book – his ninth - will be launched around July 2023. Hugh has experienced and photographed artisanal mining around the world and knows the sector as well as almost anyone going around. He has literally lived, worked, breathed, and suffered with the miners in his efforts to drive a better deal for them while simultaneously facilitating a greater understanding of the issues facing them by people in the world’s richest countries.

the Rotary Club of Whyalla will be going on the Glass Bottom boat tour of the cuttlefish. if you would like to join us please let us know. Phone President Brian
Did you know cuttlefish are amazing masters of disguise?
They’re so adept at changing the pigmentation of their skins to blend into their surroundings that it’s possible to see the colours as they shimmer over different environments. They also change their body shapes – and the texture of their skin – as they move along the seabed to imitate rocks, sand, or seaweed.
Cuttlefish use these remarkable powers of disguise to avoid detection by both prey and predators but during mating season they put their abilities to a different use. As males gather around a female, they exaggerate their size by flattening themselves out and elongating their bodies, which can grow up to 1m long and weigh upwards of 5kg.
